Minutes of meeting

In this minute meeting my group and I discussed where we were at with all of the work, such as, the blog, and the production work.  And how much more we needed to do and who was going to do what. 

What we have done:

As we discussed our progress so far we realise realised what had been done and what had not been done.  The work we had done was; the group production schedule, shooting schedule, shooting script, script, storyboard, treatments, focus group, questionnaires and the filming.

What we need to do:

During the discussion we also came up with a list of work that still needed to be done which was; to fix up the script, to fix up the storyboard, type up the minute meetings, edit the film and make some little changes to other pieces of work, like the shooting schedule, the production schedule and the shooting script.

Once we had noted down all the work that had be completed and all the work that needed to be completed we split the work between the group members to complete.

Treatment for Ripper

Ripper is a horror – thriller aimed at 18+ target audience.  Ripper is about a Jack the Ripper type serial killer who uniquely kills his victims early morning and leaves his trademark which is a red rose on his victim’s dead bodies.  The mysterious killer kills several people without leaving no evidence and no clues, but just one time he makes a fatal mistake which could possibly lead to his capture.

In the opening of this thriller the ripper has just killed someone and he is walking out of the mist cleaning his bloody knife, but as he is doing this he is witnessed.  The killer notices that someone has seen him, but he plays it cool and carries on, but as the young boy takes his eyes of the killer for a second to record him on his phone he looses track of the killer.  The young boy turns around and the killer is behind him and he kills the witness and this is when the film will start.

The killer will be aged around early 40’s and although he imitates a jack the ripper style killing he does not have a specific group of victims, instead he kills anyone who is in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Also all the killer’s victims are in and around the same are just like Jack the ripper.  The killers clothing will be dark and he obviously has a low status in the public’s eye.  The name given to the killer by the police is the ‘daylight ripper’.

This thriller is aimed to keep the audience on the edge of their seats and enticed.  It is also aimed to thrill the audience by using thriller elements and aspects which make good thrillers, such as; a red herring, mystery, darkness, knives, isolated locations and eerie music, these are just a few elements that are essential to include when thinking about making a good thriller that the target audience will get a good thrill from.

Treatment for Copycat Killer

This thriller movie is called ‘Copycat killer’, which is about a Jack the ripper like killer who is going on a killing spree in a small town.  The main story is about a serial killer who keeps on killing people, but without leaving any clues or trails.  This killer is different to Jack the ripper only because he does not kill a specific group of people, his victims are anyone in the wrong place at the wrong time. 

The thriller opens of with a young boy walking by a forest when he desperately needs to relieve himself, so he decides to go deep into the forest to do his business.  Although the young boy hesitates to go deep into the forest he still does.  After the young boy relieves himself he picks up his bag to leave, but he spots something in the distance.  He moves towards the object to investigate and discovers a dead body.  He realizes he needs to get out of the forest and call for help, but when he turns around the killer is standing before him.

Throughout the course of the film the killer kills many innocent victims and he confuses the police by not leaving any clues or evidence, but one time he makes a mistake which leads to disastrous events for him.  The opening of this film is about 2 minutes long and the whole film is about an hour and 58 minutes long.

The main setting for the opening of this thriller is the forest which becomes a sort of theme for this film.

Analysis of a thriller opening - Shutter island

Analysis of opening of Shutter island

Shutter island opens with a long shot of a boat appearing slowly out of some mist on sea. The way the boat comes out of the mist could possibly suggest that something is being hidden. The use of the mist creates mystery and tension. The boat is in the middle of an ocean and is isolated which puts the characters in a vulnerable position. Isolation is also a thriller convention. The lighting in this scene is bright from the natural lighting which puts the audience in a false sense of security.

The next shot is a high angled shot of Leonardo Dicaprio throwing up in a sink on the boat. The use of the high angle makes the protagonist look and inferior and low as he is feeling low.

The lighting in this shot is dim which could reflect on the way the character is feeling.

Leonardo Dicaprio then walks out of the bathroom and picks up his long grey detective style coat and a grey detective style top hat. This portrays that he is a detective. The shot used here is a eye level shot which conveys that now he is feeling better and his status goes back up from being inferior. The lighting in this shot is bright from natural lighting shining in through the windows of the boat. The bright lighting reflects on the characters emotions and backs up the idea that he is feeling better now and is in a better position.

The next camera shot is a eye level shot which conveys that everything is still normal. The lighting in this shot is still quite bright which still portrays that he is feeling better. The bright lighting is also still keeping the audience in a false sense of security. The two detectives are smoking in this shot which kind of stereotypes cops.

The next shot is an extreme long shot/ establishing shot which shows the island appearing out of the mist. This again could suggest that something is being hidden. The island is isolated in the middle of the ocean which puts the characters in a very vulnerable position. The water through this scene looks artificial, which could reflect on the storyline of the film. The island is in an extreme territory which conveys a harsh environment. The clearing of the mist and the appearing of the island creates a sense if mystery and suspense.

The opening of the film ends when Leonardo Dicaprio and his partner reach the isolated island.
